Hello Wonderful Parents, This week we finished with the Circles lesson and began Area of geometric figures. Next week we will begin Composite Area of geometric figures. Standard: MGSE7.G.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms. Each week I will send you a Missing Assignments Report. This is to keep you informed of the assignments your scholar needs to complete to stay up to date. Once a month parents, I will send a Failing Grade Report to notify you that your scholar is currently failing math. Parents I'm doing this so you are aware of your scholar's progress and you can help me keep your scholar on pace with their assignments. I need your support to encourage and in some cases, enforce your scholar to do their math assignments. You can view these assignments and more in Parent Campus. You can also set alarms that will notify you of a failing score. My tutorial is Wednesday mornings at 7:30 am. If afternoons work better for you, Mr. Grant and Mr. Lewis, two of our 7th grade math teachers, offers tutorial in the afternoon. Have a great weekend and as always, thank you for your support! Lydia Hordges

WEEKLY UPDATE FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 20, 2020

Hello Wonderful Parents

Monday is the Martin Luther King holiday and the school will be closed.

To my new parents, please come to the school and register for Campus Parent to view your child's assignments and grades in real time. When scholars know their parents are actively monitoring their progress, scholars tend to perform better, and parents become proactive in the success of the scholar.

We are finishing our lessons on Angles and Triangles. Today we will take a test on these lessons.

Tuesday we begin our lessons on Circles. Standard: MGSE7.G.4 Given the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle, use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.

There are two IXL assignments and one iReady Math blue assignment for this lesson which I will assign next week. Parents please encourage your child to complete their weekly assignments so they won't fall behind.

First Semester Report Cards go home today. Please ask your child to share it with you so you can review it and set goals for this semester. Subtract the grade on the report card from 140 to determine the minimum grade needed to pass the class for the year.

If necessary, summer school is the first three weeks in June and will be held here at Sandtown. Transportation is limited. My tutorials are Wednesday mornings at 7:30am.

Thank you for your support,

Lydia Hordges

Hello Wonderful Parents,

This week we began our Geometry unit. Standard: MGSE7.G.2 Explore various geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on creating triangles from three measures of angles and/or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique

triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle.

There are three assignments for this standard, two iReady Math blue assignments: Construction of Triangles and Problem solving with Angles; and IXL 7.W.4

First semester report cards will go home Monday January 13th. I will send out a reminder on Monday. Please review the report card with your scholar and set goals for the new semester. Subtract the first semester grade from 140. This is the grade needed second semester to pass math for the year. My tutorial is Wednesday mornings at 7:30 am.

Thank you for your support,

Lydia Hordges

Hello Wonderful Parents,

Scholars are on Thanksgiving break and will return to school Monday December 2st.

School Progress Reports went home today, please ask your scholar to share it with you that you may set some goals for the remainder of the semester. In an effort to offer recovery to scholars, I have re-opened up the iReady Math blue assignments that were due in Unit 1. Scholars should work on and complete them over the holiday break if they haven't already completed them.

We are currently in Unit 3; Ratios and Proportional Relationships. Standards:

MGSE7.RP.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.

MGSE7.RP.2b Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.

MGSE7.RP.2c Represent proportional relationships by equations. For example, if total cost t is proportional to the number n of items purchased at a constant price p, the relationship between the total cost and the number of items can be expressed as t = pn.

MGSE7.RP.2d Explain what a point (x, y) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in

terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0, 0) and (1,r) where r is the unit rate.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday,

Lydia Hordges

Scholars are finishing up their iReady Math and IXL assignments for Unit 2 this weekend. Parents, please ensure your scholar is working diligently to complete the assignments. Have your scholar show you their assignments in iReady and IXL to prove they have completed the assignments posted in Infinite Campus. I am in the process of assigning Unit 3assignments.

Grades close November 15th. The last Progress Report of the semester will go home November 20th. I will notify you on that date to remind you to view the report with your scholar.

I will give scholars the opportunity to make-up missing iReady assignments over the Thanksgiving Holiday. More information to come.

We are beginning Unit 3, Ratios and Proportional Relationships. The standards for this week are:

MGSE7.RP.1 Compute unit rates associated

with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. For example, if a person walks 1/2 mile in each 1/4 hour, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction (1/2)/(1/4) miles per hour, equivalently 2 miles per hour.

MGSE7.G.1 Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures,

including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and

reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.

MGSE7.RP.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.

As always, thank you for your support

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 4th

Hello Wonderful Parents,

Last week first quarter progress reports went home but some scholars didn't receive one. There was a technical issue with the printing process and reports will be re-distributed when the problem is corrected. I will notify you when the first quarter reports are re-distributed.

We are concluding Unit 2, Expressions and Equations, next week with Inequalities; standard MGSE7.EE.4b Solve word problems leading to inequalities of the form px + q > r or px + q < r, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers. Graph the solution set of the inequality and interpret it in the context of the problem. For example, as a salesperson, you are paid $50 per week plus $3 per sale. This week you want your pay to be at least $100. Write an inequality for the number of sales you need to make, and describe the solutions.

The unit 2 assessment will be Nov. 6th.

I will offer a Thanksgiving Recovery for students who didn't complete the Unit 1 and 2 iReady assignments. I will re-release all the assignments during the Thanksgiving break and will close the assignments at the end of the break. This is the only recovery I will offer this semester; there is no recovery for IXL assignments. Parents, PLEASE check Campus Parent to see which assignments need to be made up (missing), then monitor your scholar's progress and ensure they have completed the required assignments. FIRST SEMESTER REPORT CARD GRADES WILL BE EXPORTED DECEMBER 13. 140 points are required to pass for the year (subtract current grade from 140 to know what grade must be earned second semester to pass for the year).

This weekend's homework is iReady Math blue. There are two assignments on Equations that need to be completed this weekend; the third assignment is on Inequalities which we will do next week.
