JANUARY 5, 2020 Dear Families, Scholars will be studying the experiences of people in Southern Sudan. Sudan was engaged in a civil war for many years. In class and at home, students will be reading the novel, A Long Walk to Water , by Linda Sue Park, and reading accounts of many people who were affected by the Sudanese Civil War. A Long Walk to Water describes accounts of violence. It is not graphic or gruesome, but anytime we read about violence in the world, we need to be extra thoughtful to make sure that everyone feels safe. We will discuss strategies to support safety during a difficult reading (such as: taking a break from reading, talking to an adult or friend about your thoughts, journaling, or writing a note to the teacher).
On a personal note, this book is incredibly powerful and inspiring. If you have time to read it so that you can have discussions with your children about the world, poverty, struggles, and hope. We are so excited to have this book as part of our curriculum. We will also be working towards a service project at the end of the unit which we will send more information on later. We thank you for your support. Thank you,
There will be 2 ELA teachers from each grade level available for tutoring every Thursday from 4:20 – 5:20. Students are welcome to attend even if their teacher is not present. In the event that a student only wants to stay with his/her teacher personalized arrangements can be made between that teacher and student.
Expectations: Students who stay after school for tutoring should report to the cafeteria and wait for the ELA teacher(s) on duty pick them up after the busses have departed. Students should not be released from their 6th block class until bus riders are dismissed.
Process for attending tutorial: Students who will stay for tutoring need to inform their teacher of their desire to attend. Teacher will inform the assigned teacher of students that will be staying. Their assigned teacher will also let their student(s) know who will be hosting tutoring for their grade level so they know who to expect for cafeteria pick-up.
